Making Clean Tech Sexy

The Kalundborg Symbiosis is the world’s first and most advanced industrial symbiosis. An industrial symbiosis is a system wherein one company’s waste becomes another company’s raw material. The collaboration between the public and private companies (including Novo Nordisk, DONG Energy and The Municipality of Kalundborg) involved in The Kalundborg Symbiosis has proven to be so beneficial, both economically and environmentally, that the European Union has devoted funds to promoting this kind of collaboration in the region.

The Kalundborg Symbiosis is a world-class example of sustainability both in theory and practice, since the involved parties benefit both financially and environmentally. The only problem is that too few people know about it. The Kalundborg Symbiosis had also been granted resources to found a Symbiosis Centre, also located in Kalundborg, meaning that we needed to create a new type of communication to show the potential of industrial symbioses, as well as giving information about the new Symbiosis Centre.

Campbell Co. uncovered data about the 50 year old symbiosis, by various methods including interviewing present and past personnel and collecting press articles, and made visual research into how to communicate a complex concept like this symbiosis.

During the process, it became clear that Campbell Co. had to help The Kalundborg Symbiosis and its newly founded Symbiosis Centre to make service development more efficient, and to communicate their benefits clearly, in order to sell the idea of industrial symbioses to other regions and countries.

Campbell Co. have developed and executed a brand strategy and design that, among other things, has resulted in new names, a new website with social media integration, a new film and a new graphic identity including logos. The identities for both The Kalundborg Symbiosis and the Symbiosis Centre have been developed as sister brands, as can be seen on their websites: and

Kalundborg Symbiosis did receive the desired attention from the EU. Especially from Connie Hedegaard and Janez Potocnik, the environmental commissioner for the EU.

The diverse group of board members are happy, the new Facebook group is busy and The Kalundborg Symbiosis now has a design and a communication platform that reflects who they are.

The CEO of the Symbiosis says:

We are all very happy with the new identity and communications platforms that Campbell & Co. has created for us. Everywhere I show the new film I get positive feedback. It gives a good impression of who we really are, and people get to understand what we do much more quickly and effectively.
